From the SDGs to the Atelier: MAISON MOTEMA at the United Nations

This week, MAISON MOTEMA joined the conversation at the United Nations Fashion & Lifestyle Network in New York, bringing our work in luxury leather goods into a wider dialogue on sustainable development, materials and the future of fashion.

For our founder, Verlaine-Diane Soobroydoo, the moment carried particular meaning. After more than a decade working within the United Nations system and global policy spaces on sustainable development, women’s leadership and economic empowerment, she returned to the UN from a new position: as the founder of a house implementing those principles through business.

MAISON MOTEMA was built on a simple conviction: sustainable development must move beyond commitments and into production, skills, employment, value chains and the people behind the product.

In our atelier in Dakar, this vision takes form through leather goods designed in New York and made in Dakar with precision, patience and savoir-faire. Every piece reflects a relationship between material, construction, dignity and value. The work is not only about creating beautiful objects. It is about building a house where craftsmanship is centered, where skills are strengthened, and where luxury becomes a vehicle for economic participation.

At the United Nations, MAISON MOTEMA spoke to the connection between materials and meaning.
For us, sustainable fashion is not only about what a product is made from. It is also about how it is made, who makes it, what value remains in the community of production, and whether the system behind the product creates dignity and opportunity.

This is the foundation of MAISON MOTEMA’s work: from the SDGs to the atelier, from policy to implementation.

As the house continues its New York week with industry meetings and an in-store pop-up in SoHo, the message is clear. The product is the proof. Each Maam, Cayor, Jackie and Croisé carries the story of a growing luxury house rooted in design, craftsmanship and a different vision of value.

MAISON MOTEMA is not only participating in the conversation around sustainable fashion. We are building one example of what implementation can look like.
